Herzlich willkommen auf der Seite des Fachdidaktischen Seminars Englisch des BBS-Studienseminars Mainz!
Welcome to the homepage of the English seminar at the teacher‘s training college for vocational education and training (VET) in Mainz.
Das Fach Englisch an Berufsbildenden Schulen / Teaching English in vocational schools
„Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.“ (Benjamin Franklin)
Since memories fade with time and lessons are forgotten, we put an emphasis on being able to hold lessons that offer our students in VET experiences and discoveries.
Teaching English at vocational schools involves a communicative and action-oriented approach in order to enable students to communicate effectively in private and work related contexts in a globalised world. Our objectives are to develop students’ language proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, listening and mediating as well as developing an awareness and understanding of various cultures.
English can be taught in different vocational areas, such as business studies, catering, childcare, health & care, mechanics, metal work and many more.
Einblicke in die Arbeit im Fachseminar / English Teacher Training
VET-English teachers in training usually teach at one of the vocational schools in the Rheinhessen region accompanied by courses on didactics and methodology at the Mainz seminar.
The English seminar courses are based on the teacher trainees‘ needs and resources. There is also an emphasis on incorporating each trainees‘ professional background and experience into their individual path in becoming a fully qualified English teacher in VET.
With reference to these basics the following principles are to be held fundamental for the seminar of TEFL:
- learning by doing: practising the advertised approaches and methods in the seminar and at school.
- curriculum as a process: joint planning of the programme of our term according to requests of participants.
- cooperation (of trainees and trainers): is seen as a condition for successful training and development of resources
